Dental care for children with special health care needs

Management of dental problems in children with special health care needs is carried out in three phases:

  1. Relief of pain and control of infections
  2. Treatment or elimination of existing untreated disease
  3. Planning for prevention of further disease.

Many children with a medical, physical, developmental or cognitive disability may have a greater need for dental treatment. However, considering the demanding nature of dental treatment procedures, delivery of care is often challenged by the individual needs of the child. Our passion as a team lies in modifying oral hygiene techniques and diets to suit the distinct needs of each child. We work with children and their families to customize a prevention program. The good news is that if dental care is followed effectively and conscientiously, your child can enjoy a healthy smile because dental disease in most cases is preventable.

As pediatric dentists, we receive advanced training that focuses on care for children with special needs. We understand and modify treatment plans to suit the specific needs of the child.

While some children with special needs may cooperate with Behaviour Management Techniques, for more complicated procedures, many children would require treatment under General Anesthesia.
